Dog car accessories deal with hair, dust, wet paws and occasional mud. Regular light cleaning is usually easier than waiting for dirt to build up, especially on products that contain rigid internal panels.
Start with dry debris
Remove loose hair, sand and dirt before adding moisture. Use a vacuum, brush or other method appropriate for the actual outer material.
Deal with fresh mud carefully
Follow the product's care instructions. Depending on the material, letting heavy mud dry before removing loose dirt may be easier than rubbing it into the surface.
Use the verified cleaning method
Do not assume that a hard-bottom extender can be put directly into a washing machine. Rigid boards, inserts, zips and coatings can change what cleaning methods are appropriate.
Do not leave the product damp
After approved spot cleaning or other moisture exposure, allow the product to dry according to its care instructions before storing it folded.
Inspect while cleaning
Cleaning is a useful time to check straps, buckles, seams and rigid panels for visible damage or movement.
Protect the car underneath too
Occasionally remove the extender and clean the underlying rear seat and footwell so dirt does not remain trapped beneath the setup.
