'Waterproof' and 'water-resistant' are often used as if they mean the same thing. They do not. When comparing dog car seat covers or hard-bottom extenders, it is worth treating each claim carefully.
Water-resistant
A water-resistant material is designed to resist some moisture exposure, but that description does not necessarily mean liquid can never pass through the complete product.
Waterproof
A waterproof claim is stronger. For a complete product, seams, openings, zips, stitching and construction can matter just as much as the surface fabric.
The top layer is not the whole product
A fabric specification alone may not describe the performance of seams or the underside. Check what the manufacturer or supplier has actually verified.
Why this matters with hard-bottom extenders
Products containing rigid panels may require different cleaning and drying methods from a simple flexible cover. Do not assume the whole product can be soaked or machine washed unless its care instructions explicitly say so.
Questions to ask before buying
- Is the claim for the fabric or the complete product?
- Are seams included in the claim?
- What cleaning method is specified?
- Do rigid components need to be removed?
- What should happen after a spill?
